What music formats does TelCanto support?

The formats which can be browsed and selected for playing depend on the music library which is being used, as indicated by the following table:

Library MP3 WMA Ogg Vorbis (.OGG) AAC (.M4A)
TelCanto Yes Yes Yes No
Windows Media Yes Yes No No
iTunes Yes No No Yes

Support for playing different file formats depends on the player selected, as indicated by the following table:

Player MP3 WMA Ogg Vorbis (.OGG) AAC (.M4A)
Exstreamer Yes Yesı Yesı No
Windows Media Yes Yes No No
Winamp 2 Yes Yes Yes No
Winamp 5 Yes Yes Yes Yes
SlimServer Yes No No Yes²

Notes

1. WMA and OGG files are converted on the fly to MP3 in order to play them on the Exstreamer.
2. M4A files are converted on the fly to MP3 by SlimServer in order to play them.

In both cases 1 and 2, the LAME encoder DLL (lame_enc.dll) must be installed, either in the TelCanto Server installation directory or in the Windows System32 directory.

It should be noted that file conversion from one lossy format to another (transcoding) may result in a degradation in quality.

Does TelCanto support the Rio/DDAR receiver?

Not directly, but TelCanto can play music using the Rio/DDAR using the following approach:

  • Install tRio software on the Rio/DDAR and PC.
  • Set up a streaming server on the PC, e.g. using SlimServer or Winamp & Shoutcast.
  • Configure TelCanto to play via SlimServer or Winamp.
  • Configure a radio station in tRio, with its url pointing to the streaming server.

How do I obtain cover art for display in TelCanto?

Cover art is available from a variety of sources and may either be embedded within the audio file, or saved in the same folder as the audio files with the name "folder.jpg".  We recommend the use of SoftPointer's Tag&Rename which, in addition to editing the tags within music files, can download cover art and tag data from www.allmusic.com.

Do I need to obtain an additional license from Barix to use multiple synchronized Exstreamers with TelCanto?

No, TelCanto does not require the synchronization functionality provided within the Exstreamer firmware, but performs its own synchronization.

Do I need to run the zServer software when using an Exstreamer with TelCanto?

No, TelCanto streams MP3 data to the Exstreamer in Mode 4, and does not require the zServer software.

Is there a Windows PC client?

Not yet, but we plan to release one soon.

Can the server control multiple independent music sources?

A single server instance can only control one music source, although this may be played on multiple players if required, using Exstreamer.  However, you can run multiple instances of the server on a single machine, each with a different music library and player configuration, and you can switch between these different servers from the Pocket PC client.
